Getting Around Coronado Island

Coronado Island's temperate weather, slow pace and small size make it ideal for traveling around by foot or bike.

Traveling around Coronado Island is easy whether you feel like a strolling past the overflowing gardens (stopping to smell the roses of course) or whizzing past the ocean scenery beyond. There are numerous places to rent bikes and skates on Coronado including unique four wheel carriages. If you're not feeling up to pedaling yourself, you can always hire one of these pedicabs to tour around the island.

Old Town Trolley offers a unique tour to take in the sights of San Diego. Leaving from Orange Avenue in front of McPs Irish Pub, the trolley whisks tourists on a hop-on, hop-off tour of major San Diego attractions including the world-famous San Diego Zoo and Balboa Park.

For a unique tour of Mission Bay, the bay between Coronado Island and San Diego, SEAL Tours offers tours by land and sea on a "Boat on Wheels".

Getting To Coronado Island:

Coronado is serviced by San Diego International Airport at Lindbergh Field with numerous flights daily between San Diego and locations throughout the country. Rental car companies are located on the lower level near baggage claim. Or, shuttle service is available through several companies, including Coronado Livery ( 619-435-6310) and Cloud 9 Shuttle.

Driving Directions:

Upon exiting the airport, turn left on North Harbor Drive. After about a mile, turn left on West Grape Street. After about a ½ mile, the I-5 South on-ramp is in the far right lane. Take Interstate 5 south to the Coronado exit (Highway 75). Be sure to go up the exit ramp (not down) for the Coronado exit. The exit ramp goes up on to the Coronado Bridge, which ends at 3 rd Street and Glorietta Blvd. in Coronado. There are no left turns allowed on 3 rd Street until you reach Orange Avenue. Go right before Orange Avenue to reach the Marriott or Ferry Landing. Drive time from the airport is approximately 20 minutes. Coronado can also be accessed from the south via the Silver Strand through Imperial Beach.

For pedestrian and bicycle traffic, there is a ferry service that runs between the Broadway Pier in downtown San Diego and Ferry Landing in Coronado. Ferries leave San Diego on the hour and Coronado on the half hour. There is also an on-call water taxi that services Ferry Landing in Coronado as well as numerous hotels, restaurants and shopping centers in the area.
