Scripps Birch Aquarium, San Diego, California
The Birch Aquarium at Scripps was founded to provide ocean science education, interpret Scripps research and promote ocean conservation. The aquarium is home to 46 display tanks - which hold 150,000 gallons of seawater with exhibits representing 183 fish species and 208 invertebrate species - as well as a demonstration tide pool and an interactive museum. Highlights of the aquarium include a giant Pacific octopus, a 70,000-gallon tank displaying a kelp forest in its natural setting with a wave-making machine and natural sunlight and all its marine life, and exhibits on the marine life of southern California and tropical Mexico. Just outside the aquarium, the tide pools provide an opportunity for visitors to get a close-up look at sea urchins, sea cucumbers, sea stars and much more. The Scripps Hall of Oceanography, next store to the aquarium, features “Exploring the Blue Planet”, the largest oceanographic exhibition in the U.S.
Scripps Birch Aquarium is open 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily. For more information about the aquarium or for oceanographic educational information, visit their website at www.aquarium.ucsd.edu.
